What Does Board Certification in Facial Plastic Surgery Mean?

Board certification reflects a surgeon’s training, expertise, and commitment to a specific field. A board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon has completed advanced education focused exclusively on the face, eyes, and neck. This specialization matters because facial anatomy is complex, and subtle differences in technique can significantly impact both outcomes and longevity.

Why Facial Plastic Surgery Is a Distinct Specialty

Facial plastic surgeons are trained differently from general plastic surgeons or cosmetic physicians. The path begins with an internship in general surgery and a five-year residency in Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery.

This training offers in-depth expertise in facial anatomy, structure, and function, encompassing the eyes, nose, face, and neck. During residency, surgeons perform extensive reconstructive and cosmetic procedures specific to this region, gaining focused experience that extends beyond general cosmetic training.

Fellowship Training: Advanced Specialization

Surgeons who choose to focus exclusively on facial plastic surgery may pursue an additional fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, sponsored by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

This fellowship is highly competitive, offered to only 45 surgeons per year, and includes:

  • Completion of this process leads to board certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Advanced surgical training
  • Submission of a surgical log documenting 100 consecutive facial plastic surgery cases within two years
  • Rigorous written and oral examinations

Dr. Karam’s Credentials and Focus

Dr. Amir M. Karam is double board-certified by both:

  • The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
  • The American Board of Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery)

His practice is limited exclusively to cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery, allowing for deep specialization rather than divided focus. With extensive experience in facial and nasal surgery and subspecialty training in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Karam is uniquely qualified to treat cosmetic and reconstructive concerns of the face, eyes, neck, and nose.

Why Specialization Matters for Results

A surgeon’s understanding of facial anatomy has a direct impact on outcomes. Specialized training allows for:

  • More precise surgical planning
  • Better preservation of natural features
  • Consistent, natural-looking results

This foundation is essential when addressing complex areas, such as the midface, eyes, jawline, and neck, where balance and restraint are most crucial.

Evaluating a Surgeon’s Aesthetic Vision

Credentials are important, but results matter, too. Reviewing before-and-after photos helps you determine whether a surgeon’s aesthetic approach aligns with your own goals. At Dr. Karam’s practice, results are known for looking natural, balanced, and appropriate, regardless of the degree of change.
