Latisse™
What's all the buzz about!
Latisse™ is getting all the buzz these days. Latisse is the first FDA
approved drug specifically indicated to promote eyelash growth. Allergan the makers of Botox
and Juvederm, also make Latisse. According to Allergan, Latisse users can expect to experience
longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes in as little as eight weeks, with full results in 16 weeks."
No wonder everyone wants it. Once Latisse is stopped, eyelashes will slowly return to there
pre-treatment appearance. The prescription requires a brief medical evaluation from a physician
to make certain there are no contraindications.
Why everyone wants it.
Beautiful long eyelashes have always been highly desired by women across cultures.
Their presents creates a warm, feminine quality that universally warms and enhances the intrinsic
beauty of the eyes. For years, a variety of mascara products have been put on the market to create
this attractive look. Today, Latisse, the first FDA approved drug specifically indicated to promote
eyelash growth is giving mascara a run for its money. In 8-16 weeks of use, users will experience
fuller, longer, and darker eyelashes without the need for mascara.
Safety and Side Effects.
Even though Latisse™ is used for cosmetic enhancement of the upper eyelashes,
it is not mascara. It is a FDA approved medical drug that is manufactured by Allergan, the makers
of Botox and Juvederm, specifically indicated for creating longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes.
It's active ingredient is Lumigan, which is a glaucoma drug. According to Allergan, Latisse™
was well-tolerated in its clinical trials, with the most common side effects being eye redness, itchy
eyes, and skin hyperpigmentation. Most of these are reversible once it is stopped. The overall, side
effect rate is 4% according the Allergan. In order to know if Latisse™ is right for you, it is
required that all new users have an evaluation by a physician. Certain drugs, eye drops, and eye
conditions can increase the risk of other side effects. If you would like more information, please
let me know. I would love to discuss this topic with you further.
How it is used with other Cosmetic Treatments.
As the old saying goes, the eyes have it. My practice specializes in aesthetic facial
plastic surgery. Most of my patients want to look better or younger. Perhaps one of the best ways to
accomplish this goal is to enhance the eyes. After all, this is the part of our face that most people
are looking at during day to day conversation. With the launch of Latisse™, the new eyelash
thickening, lengthening, and darkening drug, we have another tool to help our patients create a more
beautiful eye. I personally, think this product is a great compliment to Botox, which reduces the
appearance of wrinkles around the eyes. Another very complimentary cosmetic procedure is the use of
a filler to correct the hollows beneath the lower eyelid region. These are all simple complimentary
methods in which Latisse™ can be paired together to enhance the natural beauty of an individual's
eyes. Of course, it can also enhance the results of our blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and fat
transfer results as well.
