Am I a Good Candidate for a Hand Fat Transfer?

One of the safest and most effective ways of treating issues related to the appearance of the hands involves rejuvenating them with a simple fat transfer. This procedure adds volume and greatly improves the appearance of the hands, essentially reversing the gradual loss of collagen that takes place as we age. The overwhelming majority of middle-aged patients that visit Carmel Valley Aesthetics Center are good candidates for a hand fat transfer.

You’ll need to be in good general health to undergo the procedure, though it’s by no means a major surgery. You’ll need to have at least one donor site on your body with available fat cells that can be repositioned. That’s generally not an issue for most. To learn more about how hand fat transfers can help you, simply reach out to our office and set up your consultation today.

What Does Hand Fat Transfer Treat?

Hand Fat Transfers are performed for cosmetic reasons, to help patients look and feel younger by restoring their hands back to the way they looked when they were in their 20s or 30s. The procedure can also have a couple of cool health benefits as well, with some reporting that their hands feel stronger, that their joints and knuckles don’t ache as much as they did, and that they have softer smoother hands.

Hand Fat Transfer at a Glance

Hand fat transfers, also sometimes called micro-lipo injections or autologous fat transplantation, are a simple and straightforward procedure. The process is quick and efficient:

  • Liposuction is quickly done to harvest healthy fat from another area of the body (usually the belly, thighs, or buttocks).
  • This fat is then purified and prepared for grafting.
  • A fine needle and cannula are used to inject the healthy fat into those areas of the hand that have lost life and volume.
  • To account for the body’s natural reabsorption of the injected fat, more fat than required is injected (as the body will absorb a certain percentage of this, and we want you looking great even after that occurs).
  • The hand is massaged to ensure the fat is evenly distributed, addressing your initial goals for the procedure, and leaving your hands looking healthier and more youthful.
  • Following the procedure, some patients see their hands as looking as much as 10 to 20 years younger.

Fat Transfer Recovery

Immediately after a hand fat transfer, you might experience slight redness and discomfort, and bruising is possible at injection points. Your hands will also likely be puffy or swollen. These side effects tend to dissipate quickly and a long period of rest of recovery isn’t necessary.

Ice packs or cold compresses can help ease these effects more rapidly. Don’t apply too much pressure though, as you don’t want to force fat into new areas of your hands unnaturally. Some of these side effects may last for seven to 10 days.
