How a Deep Plane Facelift Works

A deep plane facelift is an advanced surgical procedure focusing on the SMAS layer, a deeper layer of muscular and soft tissue beneath the skin. This technique tightens and lifts the middle and lower areas of the face while also lifting, draping, and tightening the skin covering the cheek and lower face. Deep plane facelifts are more invasive than skin-only and have a longer recovery time but are more long-lasting. They can address multiple areas of the face simultaneously.

During the procedure, the surgeon creates an incision along the hairline and around the ear, then separates the skin from the underlying SMAS layer. The SMAS layer is lifted, repositioned, and tightened to correct sagging and loss of volume in the middle and lower areas of the face. The skin is then redraped over the newly repositioned SMAS layer, and any excess skin is removed. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures or staples.

The deep plane facelift technique provides a more natural and youthful appearance without the "pulled" or "tight" look that can occur with other methods.

How Vertical Restore Works

Vertical Restore is a lot more than a catchy name. This procedure that Dr. Karam carefully created, perfected, and trademarked is a unique surgical procedure, thanks to its ability to address the entire face and not just a portion.

Dr. Karam uses a deep plane approach to address the jawline and midface by releasing the facial ligaments that hold the face in its aged position, thus allowing the tissue to be elevated and repositioned without pulling against those ligaments. This is why the effect of Vertical Restore is so massive and why, despite the significant changes, the results look neither tense nor "pulled back." This release is crucial because it determines the extent of repositioning that can be achieved and the durability of the outcome.

Because Vertical Restore incorporates a deep-plane approach, it offers the most advanced yet reliable method for lifting the face and neck by extending far beyond traditional deep-plane lifts while focusing on full neck correction. This is also why Vertical Restore creates results lasting 10 to 15 years, effectively three times longer than what one might enjoy after a traditional facelift.

Finally, Vertical Restore is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation, which is much safer and has a significantly shorter postoperative recovery time.

Comparing Vertical Restore to Other Facelifts

Compared with a traditional or deep plane facelift, the Vertical Restore offers far more differences than similarities. Essential points of contrast are that the lift is vertically oriented, not horizontally, which is a significant reason for the natural look. Additionally, the Vertical Restore addresses your entire face and not just a portion of it, simultaneously rejuvenating the outer brow, midface, jawline, and neck. A traditional facelift only addresses the jawline by pulling it toward the ears.

How Long Does A Deep Plane Facelift Last?

A deep plane facelift is known for providing longer-lasting results than a traditional facelift, which only targets the superficial layers of facial tissue. A conventional facelift can improve your appearance, but the effects usually last five to seven years.

On the other hand, a deep plane facelift targets deeper layers of tissue, resulting in more comprehensive and longer-lasting results that can last up to ten years or more.

It's worth noting that while a deep plane facelift can provide long-lasting results, it's not a permanent solution to aging signs. You may need additional procedures in the future to maintain your desired appearance.

Deep Plane Facelift Recovery

Recovery from a deep plane facelift is a gradual process, and understanding the timeline can help manage your expectations. While Dr. Karam’s Vertical Restore approach reduces recovery time, here’s what you can generally expect:

  • Immediate Post-Op: Right after the surgery, you'll be closely monitored by our medical professionals. You may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which is completely normal.
  • First Week: Swelling and bruising typically peak within the first few days. Pain and discomfort can be managed with prescribed medications. You should rest as much as possible during this period.
  • Weeks 2-3: Most initial swelling and bruising will subside, and you may start to see some early results. It's crucial to diligently follow Dr. Karam’s post-operative care instructions, including keeping your head elevated and avoiding strenuous activities.
  • Months 2-3: As the deep plane facelift recovery progresses, you'll notice a significant improvement in your facial appearance. However, some residual swelling may persist, and your final results can take several months to emerge fully.
  • Long-Term: Your final results will continue to refine over the next 6 to 12 months. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and skincare regimen will help prolong the benefits of your deep plane facelift.
