What is Coolsculpting?

Achieve remarkable fat loss results without surgery or downtime

Since its inception, Coolsculpting has quickly become one of America’s most popular and in-demand forms of non-surgical body sculpting, giving millions of patients a new lease on life.

Coolsculpting is an innovative technology that freezes the fat cells, which are then flushed out by the body as waste. The process is remarkably effective on areas of stubborn fat that do not respond to dieting or exercise. Dr. Karam provides this procedure as a remarkable method of contouring the body, with some of the best CoolSculpting San Diego and La Jolla have to offer.

Before & After

Good CoolSculpting Candidates:

  • Fat deposits in the key areas of the arms, legs, belly, hips, thighs and bra region
  • Normal skin elasticity
  • Good health, both mentally and physically
  • No major medical issues
  • Realistic expectation for improvement rather than perfection

Poor CoolSculpting Candidates:

  • Patients suffering from obesity
  • Those with weak skin elasticity
  • Clients with eczema, dermatitis or severe scarring
  • Those with unrealistic expectations for their results

How does Coolsculpting work?

Coolsculpting uses two cooling panels with suction to encase the fat. While being carefully monitored by a computer, the temperature of the fat deposits is slowly lowered to the point of crystallization. The fat cells die, and are escorted out of the body as waste, never to return.

  • On the day of your procedure, your Certified San Diego CoolSculpting Specialist will weigh you, photograph you and sterilize your skin. The treatment areas will be covered with a soothing gel layer that protects it from the cold. The applicators will then be affixed to the fatty deposits.
  • The sensation of Coolsculpting can be peculiar if you’re not used to it, but can feel like a mild pulling as the vacuum goes into effect. The cold can feel like a slight sting, but nothing more intense than a sunburn, for instance.
  • Our Coolsculpting in San Diego takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on how many areas are treated. Once the procedure is over, your skin may be slightly reddish and cold, but within 20 minutes you will notice visible improvement.

In addition to our CoolSculpting in La Jolla, Dr. Karam also offers DualSculpting, which cuts the treatment time in half in most cases. DualSculpting is the use of two devices as opposed to one.

CoolSculpting® vs Liposuction

A fundamental difference between CoolSculpting and liposuction is that liposuction is a surgical procedure and CoolSculpting is not. This will affect your experience in several ways:

  • Anesthetic

You won’t need any anesthetic to receive your CoolSculpting treatment. Liposuction is performed under either local or general anesthetic, or sedation, depending on the exact nature of what your surgeon is addressing. Both procedures can be delivered on an outpatient basis.

  • Length of Procedure

Liposuction surgery requires one to two hours. This does not include the time you may need to come back from general anesthetic. A CoolSculpting procedure can be completed in just one hour with no downtime.

  • Recovery

You can expect bruising and swelling that lasts for several weeks after a liposuction treatment. Small incisions will have been made in the areas that were treated, usually less than a quarter of an inch long. You may have to wait two to four weeks before engaging in strenuous activities. CoolSculpting involves much less discomfort and does not involve an extended healing process. You’ll be able to return to your usual activities at once after treatment.

There are other differences between the two procedures:

  • Results

You may see more immediate results from liposuction, although the slimming effect is obscured by swelling. The results from CoolSculpting appear more gradually, and it may be three months after your final treatment before the changes are fully apparent.

  • Frequency

Liposuction is a one-time procedure. You may need several CoolSculpting sessions to achieve your desired outcome.

  • Cost

This is a question that can only be answered with clarity through a consultation with our surgeon, Dr. Karam. If the improvements that you are seeking require treatment in multiple body locations, it could be that liposuction will be more cost-effective. If you are intending to receive another cosmetic procedure that requires surgery, liposuction could be potentially be done in the same surgical appointment. This would also have an impact on the comparative cost.

How Does a CoolSculpting Treatment Feel?

Your CoolSculpting in La Jolla treatment session involves a variety of sensations that may not be entirely familiar, but these sensations don’t include what most of us would consider to be painful.

At the beginning of treatment, a gel pad will be applied. This will feel cool and wet. Next, the treatment applicator will be placed over the area that is being treated. It will use a vacuum to suck the target area of skin and fat into the applicator. Patients have described this sensation as being similar to that of a suction cup.

Now, the process that will freeze the fat begins. You might initially experience a “pinching” sensation, but the area soon numbs. Next, the area will be released from the device and the area that was treated is massaged. This should not be uncomfortable; if anything, you may find it mildly ticklish.

How Many CoolSculpting Treatments Will I Need for Fat Loss?

There is no single answer to how many CoolSculpting treatments will produce the slimming effect you envision for your body. You will see results from a single treatment session, but you may need more than one session to achieve your goal. The number of treatments will be affected by the quantity of excess fat and how many body areas you want to slim and trim.

Each area being treated with the CoolSculpting system may benefit from one or more sessions, and your fat reduction goals. A consultation with Dr. Karam, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, is the first step in your journey to a slimmer, trimmer body contour with CoolSculpting – a non-invasive, non-surgical way to lose excess fat for the long term.
